the lies well tell: psalm 12

The lies we tell ourselves
Are usually just half-truths,
Picking among a choice of truths.

"I'm fine, thanks"
In a very general sense of the word.

"And how are you?"
Really, I'm just trying to keep up with social norms.

For the people closest to you, they might be less true.
"I'm not upset."
"I forgive you."
"It's my fault."

But we embrace those little lies
So we can tell the one big truth:
"I love you, always."
